A year ago I started out on this journey to record what Ottawa was like in 2007, 150 years after it was chosen by Queen Victoria to be Canada's Capital City. I chose as my first picture Parliament all lit up for Christmas and as I get ready to complete my story I once again show Parliament all lit up for Christmas 2007. Other than being painfully behind in the postings, it has been quite a year. I will work over the next while to complete the story as I saw it and show some of the many images I recorded this past year. This will not be the last post I do for the story, but I thought it appropriate to do one on the anniversary of when I started.

The National Capital Commission puts on this fabulous show which is projected on the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings and along with stories, music and amazing colours is a must see event in the summer time. This years show was reworked to incorporate the story of Ottawa being chosen as the Capital of Canada by Queen Victoria in 1857. At the old Nepean City Hall, Minnijean Brown Trickey along with dignitaries, members of the Ottawa Police Force, students and friends gathered to see Minniejean Brown Trickey recieve a proclamation from Mayor Larry O'Brien declaring November 5, 2007 as Minnijean Brown Trickey day in Ottawa. This is the 50th Anniversary of the "Little Rock Nine" event in Little Rock, Arkansas where nine students were escorted into Central High School and end the colour barrier.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

When the President of the United States comes to visit, it is a massive operation. Pictured above is Marine 1 and along with a plane that looks identical to Airforce 1 and 4 other helicopters they arrive long before the President. Marine 1 will carry George Bush to Chateau Montebello for the North American Summit which takes place for a little over 24 hours starting Aug 20, 2007.

Their Excellencies The Governor General Michaëlle Jean and husband Jean-Daniel Lafond officially greet George Bush along with other dignitaries and U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins.

After a brief reception and 52 minutes from the time he landed he says goodbye to the Governor General and heads off the Summit.

On the following day August 21, Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien along with Officer Gibbons give the thumbs up to those pesky photographers.

I felt very fortunate to get accredited to be able to photograph the arrival and departure of the Presidential visit. Much thanks goes out to Mr. John Waterfield who is the Manager of the Parliamentary Press Office. This visit is John's last official duty and the following day he retired and moved to British Columbia.

THE PRINCE COMES TO VISIT

As part of his official duties, Prince Edward stops by Rideau Hall to visist with their Excellencies, The Governor General Michaëlle Jean and Jean-Daniel Lafond.

A CALL TO VOTE

A call to vote. With the new elections being held every four years, Ontarians will go to the polls on October 10.
The Premiers wife Terri, introduces Dalton McGuinty as he kicks off the 2007 race in hometown Ottawa.

The Conservative Leader John Tory with wife Barbara Hackett come to Ottawa to give the final rally to the troops a week before voting day.

Conservative candidate Mike Patten does a little old fashion meet the drive home traffic as he stands across from the Dairy Queen at Merivale and Clyde on election day. Mike lost to incumbent Liberal Jim Watson.

At the Chateau Laurier Hotel Dalton McGuinty looks happy and confident as the numbers show he is on the way to a second majority in the Province of Ontario.
Premier elect McGuinty talks to the media shortly after being declared the winner in the 2007 Ontario Provincial Elections.
The numbers don't lie. Premier McGuinty looks very ready to pilot the course of Ontario for the next four years.

The newly named Ottawa Flotilla which always seems to be the official start of the boating season on the Rideau Canal, took place on May 20. It continued this year even though it is no longer a part of the Tulip Festival.

PARADE OF LIGHTS AT DOW'S LAKE

On May 19 the Annual Parade of Lights and Fireworks were held again at Dow's Lake. This year with the changes at the Tulip Festival, it was held as a separate event. GLOBAL MARIJUANA MARCH

On May 5 here in Ottawa and approximately 250 other cities, a protest march took place to take a stand on the laws regarding the use of marijuana. The marchers started at the park by Bronson and Sparks Sts., went through the Sparks St. Mall where they all "lit up" and then carried on by the Parliament Buildings and on to Major's Hill Park. http://www.globalmarijuanamarch.com/

FIVE DAYS IN JUNE

This is Spunky. Winner of the Tube Race at the Spring 2007 Ferret Frolick held June 3 in McNabb Park. Ottawa gained a new street this year when Sens Fever got some fans to ask the city to name Elgin St. as the Sens Mile so they could have a central place to go to celebrate. Signs were up in time for the Stanley Cup Finals and went from Gladstone to Lisgar Sts.
And you thought your Move was a Headache. On June 15 this house got stuck under the railway bridge on Merivale Rd. just south of Colonade as it was being moved to a new location.

The Centennial Flame is burning bright again as work is done to set up the stage for Canada Day. It was closed down for several months over the winter as it underwent major repairs. It was relit in time for the tourist season.

LOOKING BACK - SENS WIN GAME 3

Fans lined up by the thousands before the third game of the Stanley Cup Finals to cheer on their hometown Senators. In front of Scotiabank place there was plenty to see and do including new large screen 9' X 12' TV's to watch the game outside.

Peter Puck who has not been seen in a long time was in town to help with all the excitement.

Oh what a day and night it was. Our first win in 80 years in a Stanley Cup finals' game. Tens of thousands came out to Elgin St. to celebrate the win for the modern day Senators. FIVE DAYS IN MAY

Looking back to May it was all Sens fever around Ottawa. We beat Buffalo in 5 to win the Eastern Conference Championship and then off to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 80 years.

Mr. Melnyk addresses the breakfast crowd and tells this great little story about Ceasar Salads and how it has related to some of his business successes.

Mr. Watson in his capacity as Ontario Minister of Health Promotion, and Mr. Melnyk sign an agreement that will see the Ontario Government contribute a significant amount of money to help pay for the costs involved in bringing the 2009 World Junior Championship Games to Ottawa.
It's a deal.

On May 4 the Chamber Of Commerce held one of it's regular Eggs & Icons Breakfast get togethers. The guest speaker was Eugene Melnyk of the Ottawa Senators and with the great run the Senators are having, he spoke to a sold out event held at Scotiabank Place. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time...........Philip Townsend who was in Ottawa on May 6 for a showing at the Dale Smith Gallery is just such a person. He is from England and as a photographer was asked to take the first ever photo sessions of a new band in 1963 who were just starting out. WaterCan celebrated their 20th Anniversary of it's Charitable Organization at the 13th Annual Embassy Dinner/Fundraiser at the Aberdeen Pavilion on May 4. Over 700 guests enjoyed the food and drinks from 45 different Nations thanks to the Embassies and High Commissions (with no travelling required). The night raised an amazing $ 145,000 between ticket sales and the silent auction. THE TULIP FESTIVAL

Something new to the Tulip Festival this year were events called Celebridée-A Celebration Of Ideas. This night paired Murray McLaughlin with Julian Amour and was hosted by Ken Rockburn.

After 54 years the Tulip Festival was almost not to be as it had struggled over the last few years and was deep in debt. It was sold to Businessman David Luxton and with new management changed the format, eliminated the spring concert series and made all the events free to the public. Crowds were large at many of the tents on Major's Hill Park and the star attraction - The Tulips did not dissapoint. http://www.tulipfestival.ca/
